Thermal tribology!
A tricky experimental set-up allows to contactlessly measure the temperature of the friction contact.
Potassium bromide (KBr) is one of the few materials that is transparent to infrared radiation. When pressing a small plate made of KBr against a rotating plastic ball, one "sees" with a thermal imaging camera, the temperature of the friction track (green-yellow ring). The camera looks through the plate on to the ball surface. In the friction contact, where the ball touches the plate, the temperature is higher. The hot spot can be seen as a small red dot.
Now here the very difficult Christmas Riddle question: What does the camera "see", if a small plate of window glass is used for the test instead of KBr? The fact that both materials are completely transparent in the visible light, unfortunately does not help any further.
When you send us the correct answer you will receive a small tribological gift.
Depending from Jan. 11, 2012 you will find the riddle’s answer under: http://www.tillwich-stehr.com/en/home/christmas-riddle-2011/answer.html
As well as in the years before we refrain from sending picture calendars to our customers. With the according amount of money we support the work of the donation ‘German Children Cancer Aid’.
Good luck, health and a happy 2012 !
